I work across mediums to address the influence historically embedded systems of power have on representation, the body, and the environment in public and private spaces. I am fascinated, disturbed, and motivated by contemporary culture’s propensity to divorce meaning from language and symbology in effort to undermine the existence of power structures entirely. I often juxtapose text, iconographic imagery, or other cultural touchstones with abstraction in effort to identify, reveal, and subvert those systems.

Nora Hartlaub works across mediums to address the influence of nostalgia and history on current events. She lives on the outer banks of North Carolina and often explores subjects related to living in the Southeastern United States.
